SUMPUR KUDUS, Indonesia — On the night of Nov. 19, 2025, a former elementary school gym teacher knelt in the mud of a West Sumatran forest and wept. After 13 years of tracking false leads, navigating tiger habitat, and nearly exhausting his phone battery, Septian “Deki” Andriki had finally found what he sought: a blooming Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic flower unseen in the wild for more than a decade.
Andriki, a self-taught rafflesia hunter since 2012, led a team including Chris Thorogood of Oxford Botanic Garden and Joko Ridho Witono of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to the site in Sijunjung Regency. The group trekked for nearly 23 hours through dense, tiger-inhabited rainforest after a local resident tipped them off months earlier. When they found the bud unfurling its blood-red, white-speckled petals, Andriki said he was speechless. “After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” he told colleagues. “I just cried.” A ranger initially thought he had been possessed by forest spirits; Thorogood called himself “the luckiest guy alive.”
A Biological Anomaly
Rafflesia hasseltii belongs to a bizarre genus of roughly 42 recognized species—parasitic, chlorophyll-less plants that lack leaves, stems, and roots. They live invisibly inside host vines for years, erupting only rarely into blooms that can span nearly a meter across. The flowers emit a rotting-meat odor to attract carrion flies for pollination. That unpredictability and rarity make rafflesias a holy grail for field botanists—and almost impossible to protect.
Researchers estimate that about two-thirds of known hasseltii populations grow outside legally protected forests, leaving them vulnerable to logging, land conversion, and disturbance. The 2025 rediscovery, part of a multinational research effort backed by Oxford and involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, served as both a taxonomic triumph and a conservation alarm. The team is collecting DNA from more than a dozen rafflesia variants across Indonesia to map the genus’s relationships, hoping genetics may explain why the plants bloom so rarely and unpredictably.
A Broader Botanical Awakening
The Sumatran find made global headlines, but it represents just one piece of a far larger, quieter enterprise: the ongoing work to discover and name the planet’s unknown plant life—often for the first time, and sometimes for the last.
At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists describe roughly 200 new plant species annually, accounting for about one in every 10 new plants named worldwide. In 2025, the Garden highlighted standout discoveries including a Costa Rican cactus, a new daisy relative in Peru, and a species honoring Bolivia’s bicentennial. One find required two decades of patience: tropical entomologist William Haber handed a cutting of an unusual cactus to retired curator Barry Hammel roughly 20 years ago. Only when the plant finally flowered in Hammel’s Costa Rican yard was it confirmed as a new species in the moonlight cactus genus Selenicereus, likely endangered.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History reported its botanists published nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus in 2025. Botanist Laurence Dorr described four new mallow species, including one from the Wassarai Mountains of Guyana. Most striking was the description of Rojovitis, a new subgenus of Vitis—the genus containing cultivated grapes—built around two newly identified, threatened wild grape species from Chiapas, Mexico, distinguished by red flowers and stems with prominent pores. It is only the third recognized subgenus of Vitis in nearly a century.
Other discoveries required no deep jungle expedition. In Big Bend National Park, Texas, volunteer botanist Deb Manley photographed small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers sprouting between desert rocks. She uploaded the images to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist, triggering expert identification that led to an entirely new genus nicknamed the “wooly devil”—the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.
In Hawaii, researchers used a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to access a cliff face on Kauai that was physically out of reach. The drone returned samples of a previously unknown plant in the carnation family, named Schiedea waiahuluensis, likely the first new plant species ever discovered by drone.
A Race Against Dark Extinction
Together, these discoveries tell two stories. One is of persistence and occasional luck—a two-decade wait for a cactus, a volunteer’s chance photo, a robotic arm where no hand could go. The other is starker: many plants being found for the first time are already among the rarest organisms on Earth, restricted to a single mountain range or stretch of sand dune—and often already threatened.
Naming a species is not merely academic, botanists argue—it is the necessary first step before any legal protection or conservation funding can exist. A plant without a name has no defense. Now that Rafflesia hasseltii is confirmed alive and blooming, researchers can push, with data in hand, for stronger protections in a forest where most of its known populations remain unprotected.
Scientists estimate thousands of plant species worldwide remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before formal recognition—a phenomenon called “dark extinction.” Each year’s tally of new species is not just an inventory of nature’s surprises. It is a race, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
